Berlin's Charité hospital- Germany doctors have a live image of a child birth using a special MRI machine. The mother and baby — who was born Nov. 20 — are both doing fine.
The mother agreed to give birth inside the MRI machine, which was specially designed to be larger than the typical narrow cylinder. She still had to wear earmuffs to block out the high-frequency noise. To protect the baby’s hearing, the machine was shut off just before the amniotic sac opened.
The new machine will enable the researchers to study in greater detail how the baby moves through the mother’s pelvis and down the birth canal – issues that have long been studied and debated. The hospital’s Institute for Radiology and Obstetrics Clinic will work closely together on the project.
