3D has become a rage ever since James Cameroon’s Avatar hit VPCF21Z1E Sony 3D View Laptopthe screens. Sony has been a big force behind the concept of 3D with their Blu-ray products and they have now gone one step further by cramming 3D displays in to a laptop which is armed with Intel’s newest Sandy Bridge processors.

3D Sony VAIO VPCF21Z1E is portable than an average 3D TV but still you won’t be watching any 3D movies on this laptop while in a train. It is really big laptop with height of 46mm. The weight too is considerably high at 3.14 kgs.

I would recommend you to use the 3D Sony VAIO VPCF21Z1E on a desk or coffee table. The system has a glossy black lid which attracts a lot of fingerprints and the chassis tapers away underneath. From every side, this laptop gives a feeling that it is a rich luxurious powerhouse.

Peeling the thick lid back, you will see a full HD 16 inch screen of the 3D Sony VAIO VPCF21Z1E. I played some Blu-ray discs and the display delivered crisp images. On every corner of the display, there are pin sharp details and the color reproduction too is excellent. The well rendered palette of greens and blues bought the planet of Pandora to life.

I then wore the supplied active shutter glasses and pressed the 3D button on the 3D Sony VAIO VPCF21Z1E. The brightness levels of the laptop dropped significantly in the 3D mode and it switched to 120 Hz. The shutter glasses darken the content further but the quality of the display is really good. I drooled on the 3D content for hours, the environments reached deep in to the 3D space and objects came out of the screen to give an awesome experience.

3D Sony VAIO VPCF21Z1E comes with Corel’s WinDVD software which lets you watch standard 2D movies in the 3D upscaling mode. I played Pirates of the Caribbean DVD and also Avatar on Blu-ray and the results were kinda mixed. Pseudo-3D effect gives more depth to the images but it was a bit unconvincing. My eyes struggled a lot to adjust to the forced depth effect in some scenes. Upscaling mode is restricted to just WinDVD so I couldn’t engage 3D upscaling while viewing Web-based content from places like YouTube or BBC iPlayer.

Gaming is not that good in 3D either. The problem here is that the 3D Sony VAIOVPCF21Z1E has Intel’s blazing fast Sandy Bridge processor and the Nvidia GT 540M graphics card is quite modest.
