Face Transplant From Donor To Recipient

 

First US face transplant patient leaves Cleveland hospital, can now smile, eat solid food

She suffered a traumatic injury several years ago, the details of which doctors also won't reveal. But it left the woman with no nose, no palate,no way to eat and breathe normally.

During the 22-hour procedure, 80 percent of the patient’s face was replaced with bone, muscles, nerves, skin, blood vessels and some teeth taken from a woman who had died hours earlier.

She can eat pizza.She can smell perfume.She is the nation's first face transplant patient, and on Thursday night, she went home from a Cleveland hospital. "I'm happy about myself," she told her doctors.

It was the fourth face transplant in the world. “I must tell you how happy she was when with both her hands she could go over her face and feel that she has a nose, feel that she has a jaw,” Siemionow said. “She wants just to go out and be invisible in the crowd.”

It’s an example of a medical advance “that gives patients their lives back,” Dr. John Canady, president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, said in a statement.

The world's biggest snake anaconda 2009

Fossils found in northeastern Colombia's Cerrejon coal mine indicate the reptile, dubbed Titanoboa cerrejonesis, was at least 42 feet (13 meters) long and weighed 2,500 pounds (1,135 kilograms). "That's longer than a city bus and … heavier than a car," said lead study author Jason Head, a fossil-snake expert at the University of Toronto Mississauga in Canada and a research associate with the Smithsonian Institution.

Previously the biggest snake known was Gigantophis garstini, which was 36 to 38 feet (11 to 11.6 meters) long. That snake lived in North Africa about 40 million years ago.Hans-Dieter Sues, associate director for research and collections at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, was not involved with the study but has seen the snake fossils.

Sues noted that humans would stand no chance against one of these giants, which killed their prey by slow suffocation. "Given the sheer size—the sheer cross-section of that snake—it would be probably like one of those devices they use to crush old cars in a junkyard," Sues said.

In addition, the snake's heft indicates that it lived when the tropics were much warmer than they are today, a find that holds potential implications for theories of once and future climate change.

SCORPION QUEEN BREAKS WORLD RECORD 2009

 

KANCHANA KETKAEW, 39-year-old has set a new world record after spending 33 days and nights living with 5000 poisonous scorpions.

Kanchana Ketkaew, was attempting to break her 2002 world record, when she lived with 3,400 scorpions for 32 days inside a tiny glass room.

The whole show was arranged in stage at a shopping centre in Pattaya, 50 miles south of Bangkok.

Her husband known as centipede King, helped her during the record. They both married at Valentine's Day in 2006.

A R Rahman wins Golden Globe and SCORES THREE OSCAR NOMINATIONS

India’s music composer maestro Alla Rakha Rahman (AR Rahman) created history on Sunday night as he became the first Thamizhian to win a prestigious golden globe award.

AR Rahman won a Golden Globe award for Best Original Score for his music in British director Danny Boyle's uplifting underdog tale "Slum dog Millionaire" at "The 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards" held on Jan 11th, 2009.

Forty – two year old AR Rahman was born on January 6th 1966 in Chennai as A.S. Dilipkumar. His father RS Shekhar was of Thamizhian descent and a one – time assistant to music composer Sutharsanam and also composed music for Kerala movies.

Dileepkumar was nine years old when his father died. Two years later the Hindu family converted to Islam .His name was changed to Alla Rakha Rahman.

Rahman who studied western classical music in London got his first big break in composing music in cinema for the Tamil film “Roja” in 1992.

Thereafter he never looked back and went on to score music for scores of movies in different Indian languages.

He has won numerous wards for his music composition and was hailed by “Time” magazine as the “Mozart of Madras”.

Tamil fans have dubbed him as “Isaipuyal” (Musical storm) Several films became blockbusters mainly due to Rahman’s music.

His film scores and soundtracks have sold more than 100 million records and 250 million audiocassettes.Rahman is one of twenty – five all time top –selling recording artistes.

Tamils worldwide are excited by the news that AR Rahman has become the first Tamil to get a golden globe and next, hopefully an Oscar.
